A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Ashok Saxena, Ph.D.

College of Engineering

The Biomedical Engineering Initiative

Engineers solve problems and that will never change. What has changed, and will continue to change, are the types of problems that engineers are called upon to solve. It is our responsibility -- as engineers, as researchers, as teachers -- to respond to the needs of the dynamic world around us, directing our skills to the goal of improving the quality of life.

Traditional engineering disciplines derive their scientific foundation from physical sciences. Over the last few decades, advancements in biology have attracted the attention of engineers and have opened new challenges with the potential for profound impact on human lives.

The newest program of the College of Engineering at the University of Arkansas, Biomedical Engineering, is an outstanding example of the interdisciplinary approach of educating students in this emerging field. I welcome you to visit our website and become familiar with our exciting educational and research programs.
